Edmonton's biggest summer celebration runs from July 17-26
EDMONTON, AB – Summer thrills, action and fun are all on tap at this year’s Capital EX, running from Friday, July 17 – Sunday, July 26, 2009. Edmonton’s biggest summer celebration delivers big value for the whole family with live entertainment, familiar favorites and plenty of exciting new attractions.
“This year’s Capital EX is gearing up to be Edmonton’s biggest summer celebration to date, and a spectacular event for the whole family,” said Ken Knowles, President of Northlands. “Some of the biggest names in entertainment will be touching down for 10 full days of summer time fun!”
Capital EX will launch in style with the Canadian premiere of Cirque Shanghai Bai Xi, presented by the 2010 Toyota Tundra. Cirque Shanghai Bai Xi (BY CHI) combines incredible feats of physical strength and balance, energetic martial arts, fast paced dance and graceful pageantry, all performed in spectacular costumes on a stage high in the air. These daring and beautiful routines were first performed for China’s Imperial courts and have been passed down and enhanced through generations. This world-class production takes place three times daily in Hall D and is included in Capital EX’s $10 gate admission.
Also cruising into Canada for the first time is the FlowRider Mobile SURF Party. Learn how to shred waves like an expert or watch the pros in action during daily performances. And where there is water, sand is not far away. Watch a pile of sand become a work of art with ‘Amazing Sand’. This year’s artist, Peter Voeglaar, plans to create an undersea themed sand castle with all sorts of surprises. The FlowRider Mobile SURF Party and Amazing Sand can be found in the EX Zone presented by Pizza 73.
Fairgoers can cap off their night with some of the hottest talent around as the ED Fest Stage goes live, presented by Coca-Cola and Budweiser. It's 10 days of high energy outdoor fun for people of all ages, and it’s absolutely free with your Capital EX gate admission. The 2009 ED Fest line-up includes K-os with guest Divine Brown (July 17); Pilot Speed and Arkells (July 18); Hinder with guest The Ending (July 19); Emerson Drive with guest Adam Gregory (July 20); Marianas Trench with guest Stereos; David Clayton-Thomas with guest Powder Blues (July 22); Our Lady Peace with guest Mother Mother (July 23); Paul Brandt with guest Aaron Lines (July 24); Thornley with guest Crash Karma (July 25); and Canadian icon Howie Mandel with guest (July 26).
If you’re looking for a unique place to take five, Sip! is just what the doctor ordered. Located in Hall A, Sip! is our exclusive wine and food experience at Capital EX. Celebrating delicious food, wine, beer and spirits, fairgoers can take a break from the midway and experience a gourmet alternative to traditional fair food while watching demonstrations by the Food Network’s David Adjey or Bartender One’s Gavin MacMillan.
For a feast for your eyes, make sure to discover Northwest Originals, a visual arts experience featuring remarkable treasures from across Western Canada. This year’s featured artist is Doris Charest.
Families will take flight on an amazing nature adventure with Spirit of the Butterfly. The overwhelmingly popular butterfly exhibit returns, and will entertain young and old alike in Hall E.
Family Fun Town presented by EPCOR is another must-see for kids. Fun Town Farm presented by EnCana, Construction Zone and Fire Hall are just a few of the fun and interactive activities kids can experience this year.
The TELUS Stage will feature numerous family-friendly acts including the Doodlebops, Thomas & Friends, Toopy & Binoo and Shumka!
Over at the Penn West Energy Stage, take in the sounds of Crystal Shawanda and Eagle & Hawk in Kiyânâw, our First People’s showcase presented by EnCana.
New this year, Capital EX presents the 2009 International Association of Fairs and Exhibitions (IAFE) attraction of the year, Wild World of Lions. Featuring Lufuno, a rare white lion and his pride, the show offers interaction between man and lion, and showcases the personal relationship the trainers have with each lion. This fun and educational show includes information on lions in the wild, and provides an opportunity for questions and answers from the audience.
Some of the fiercest athletes from around the world will square off in mixed martial arts on July 18th, as King of the Cage - Excalibur descends on Rexall Place. Walking With Dinosaurs – An Arena Spectacular follows from July 22-26 in Rexall Place, and offers ticket buyers the chance to go back in time. Tickets purchased for both of these Rexall Place events include gate admission into Capital EX.
Racing alongside Capital EX once again is three days of wild with the Rexall Edmonton Indy from July 24 to 26, 2009. The biggest names in open wheel racing including Danica Patrick, Helio Castroneves and Canada’s own Alex Tagliani and Paul Tracy will battle for the checkered flag. Gate admission into Capital EX is included with every 3-day pass for the Rexall Edmonton Indy.
Thrill seekers can secure their ticket-to-ride for Capital EX starting on June 19th. The Capital EX Ride-All-Day Pass (RAD) is only $38 and includes gate admission. RAD Passes are available at all Ticketmaster outlets or participating Save-On-Foods locations from June 19 – July 16.
