Edmonton, AB – The 2008 edition of Capital EX was, yet again, Edmonton’s must-see event on the summer calendar. Edmonton’s biggest summer celebration brought the biggest names in entertainment, incredible thrills, unforgettable family fun, and amazing shopping experiences to Alberta’s Capital City.

In 2008, attendance figures for Capital EX exceeded 743,374 visitors, and overall figures were similar to years past. Attendance in 2007 reached 772,692 visitors.

“We are pleased that great new programs and enhanced attractions including Cirque Mechanics Birdhouse Factory and the Spirit of the Butterfly exhibit were crowd favorites along with the incredible response from visitors to expanded attractions in Family Fun Town and Sip! - the food and wine experience,” said Jerry Bouma, Chair of the Northlands Board of Directors.

While overall attendance for Capital EX in 2008 was marginally below attendance totals in 2007, many programming areas saw significant growth. The increasingly popular Family Fun Town was once again a hit at Capital EX as the attraction drew a record number this year with over 1800 children enjoying the pint-sized fun in Fun Town Farm in a single day.

In its second year, Sip! – the food and wine experience – achieved record numbers with over 18,500 people sampling the culinary delights from one of Edmonton’s leading food and wine attractions. The biggest headliners in music thrilled audiences at ED Fest as new attendance records were set on two separate nights with over 8,000 fans grooving to the Sam Roberts Band and with Metric on the final Saturday.

“Northlands is committed to attracting and producing the biggest events and world-class entertainment that positively impacts our regional economy and quality of life,” commented Bouma. He added, “As a business and community leader in our city, we are committed to measuring the overall success of our events – including Capital EX and the Rexall Edmonton Indy – with new indicators such as economic impact and community involvement, along with traditional measures such as attendance totals.”
