Edmonton, AB – As a leader in Alberta’s horse racing industry, Northlands is committed to working with the Horsemens’ Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) to develop a fullfledged thoroughbred meet for a three-year period beginning in the spring of 2009.
“We welcome the opportunity to partner with the HBPA for many years to come,” commented Jerry Bouma, Chair of the Northlands Board of Directors. “Although these are challenging times for the horse racing industry in Alberta, Northlands is committed to maintaining our leadership role in the industry. Our commitment to proceed with a full-fledged thoroughbred meet starting in 2009, presents an opportunity to build upon a vision for racing that is financially sustainable and is supported by the thoroughbred community.”
The Horsemens’ Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA), representing the interests of owners, trainers and employees of Alberta’s thoroughbred industry, endorses Northlands’ vision for horse racing. "The HBPA is pleased to be working with Northlands Park to facilitate growth in the thoroughbred industry and to create certainty for our membership," said Jim McFadyen, HBPA President.
“At Northlands, we recognize that this commitment to develop a thoroughbred meet will have an impact on the standardbred industry,” noted Rick Carter, Northlands Director Responsible for Racing. “We are committed to co-operating with standardbred owners as they manage the transition to alternate racing venues throughout the province,” added Carter.
Northlands has been a progressive, and successful racetrack operator for more than 100 years.
