Tetiana Hlus
Student & Junior Achievement 2010 Rookie of the Year

Meet Tetiana Hlus, Junior Achievement 2010 Rookie of the Year. A young go-getter who aspires to become CEO of her own business some day. And she just might, thanks to a $100,000 grant that Northlands has provided to Junior Achievement to advance their mission of guiding students to succeed in the world of commerce. Helping to inspire our city's next generation of business leaders was a natural fit for Northlands, because we believe that community comes first.

Q & A

Tetiana Hlus

What's your connection to Northlands?
Through Junior Achievement I was able to job shadow with Mr. Andersen, the CEO of Northlands. I joined him at meetings. We met with City Council. I learned a lot from him in one day. He taught me that an organization is like a puzzle and every single piece is as important as the next in making that puzzle whole—and making an organization succeed. The CEO is no more important than any other piece of that puzzle. The whole day was a great learning experience.

What's your favourite Northlands moment or experience?
My favourite Northlands experience was going to the Keith Urban concert and having an usher come up to me and my sister and offer us front row seats. It was very, very exciting!

What's the first concert you attended at Northlands?
Keith Urban was my first concert at Northlands. I was a big fan before, but I became an even bigger fan after seeing him live. I got to touch him! It was great!

Corn Dogs or Mini Donuts?
If I have to choose… Mini donuts. They're just delicious.

How has Northlands changed your life?
Job shadowing with Mr. Anderson gave me firsthand experience in the business world and let me see it through the eyes of a CEO. It also gave me a clear picture of what I want to work towards and showed me that I'll have to focus my studies on management to get me where I want to go.

What is the one thing about Northlands you want to tell Edmontonians that they might not know?
The one thing I'd tell Edmontonians about Northlands is how much they give back to the community. They just donated $100,000 to Junior Achievement to help young people like me learn more about business. I even got to hold the big cheque!
